Pollarding

Pollarding is a method of pruning that keeps trees and shrubs smaller than they would naturally grow. It is normally started once a tree or shrub reaches a certain height, and annual pollarding will restrict the plant to that height. Pollarding of mature tree’s is usually carried out as a last resort rather than dismantling the full tree.

How often does a tree need re-pollarding?

Depending on the variety and goal, re-pollarding cycles can be anywhere between 2-5 years. It is important to note that the regrowth can be poorly attached, and lapsed pollards with heavy limbs are prone to failure. We therefore recommend regular inspection of pollarded trees by a suitably qualified arborist,
